Embrace the Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Are you expecting a little bundle of joy? Or maybe your bestie is growing her third human while you’re over here regularly pregnant with a food baby (we see you, snack queen 👑). Whether you’re the one carrying or looking to gift some serious self-care points, prenatal massage is a game-changer during pregnancy.

Here at MMW, we’ve supported expectant mothers since 2004, from clients in their first trimester to those still booking sessions a week past their due date.

But before we go further…

A Quick Disclaimer

We’re not doctors. We don’t play them on TV, and we definitely don’t give medical advice. If you’re pregnant and curious about massage, please consult your doctor, midwife or anyone else on your medical care team first. Everyone’s situation is different, and they know your body and your pregnancy best.

Why Prenatal Massage Can Be a Lifesaver

Pregnancy is beautiful—but it’s also a wild ride filled with sore joints, hormonal shifts, and a body that just won’t let you sleep right. Luckily, prenatal massage offers natural relief and relaxation along the way.

Prenatal Massage May Help:
  • Reduce joint pain and discomfort from swelling or weight gain
  • Relieve sciatica, carpal tunnel, leg cramps, and headaches
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decrease stress and cortisol levels
  • Support better sleep and rest
  • Calm the nervous system (hello, downregulation!)
  • Provide safe, natural pain relief during pregnancy
And no, you don’t need to be in your third trimester to benefit. With medical clearance, many clients enjoy massage throughout their entire pregnancy journey.

Who Should Avoid Prenatal Massage?
Again: talk to your healthcare provider. But in general, you may want to avoid prenatal massage if you're experiencing:
  • Placenta previa or placental complications
  • Nausea or vomiting (trust us, massage and nausea don’t mix)
  • High risk of miscarriage
There’s ongoing debate about massage during the first trimester. Some therapists avoid it entirely; others handle it case-by-case. At Michigan Massage and Wellness, if you’ve been cleared and feel good, we welcome you, regardless of trimester.

The Postpartum Period Matters Too

You’ve delivered the baby—now what?

Your hormones are in free fall, you’re running on zero sleep, and your body is trying to recover from one of the most physically demanding experiences of your life. We’ve seen clients as early as five days postpartum, and massage can offer meaningful support.

Postnatal Massage benefits may include:
  • Stress relief and emotional support
  • Pain relief from delivery and posture changes
  • Hormone regulation
  • Improved lymphatic flow and reduced swelling
  • Better sleep
  • Breastfeeding support
Support Beyond the Massage Table
Massage is powerful—but it's only one piece of the puzzle. We encourage expectant and postpartum clients to pair their sessions with:
  • A nutrient-rich diet
  • Safe, regular movement
  • Thoughtful stress management
  • Clear communication with their care team
That means if you weren’t a runner before pregnancy, now isn’t the time to train for a half marathon. But if you’ve been doing CrossFit for five years? Don’t let your bump stop you (seriously. We know a mama who PR'd her squats and delivered a healthy baby at home).

Ready to Schedule or Gift a Prenatal Massage?
Whether you’re growing a human or want to treat someone who is, prenatal massage is one of the kindest gifts you can give a body that’s working overtime.
